Curriculum
- My Perspectives is a student-centered learning program where the class analyze text, cite evidence, and respond critically about language. The students take ownership of their learning through goal- setting, reflection, and demonstration of understanding. Each unit of study includes a selection of different genres and text types including multi-media that relates to a relevant insightful and inspiring discussion that explores different perspectives on these broad topics.. All texts as well as assessment notes, are available on the students online account and linked to Google classroom.
- Students will use Painless Grammar as a reference book for individual grammar support a copy is in the class for each student. Additionally, whole class grammar lessons aligned with the Common Core State Standards will be given during writing skills to help with literacy gaps in Edgenuity and to address individual concerns.
- The Edgenuity program is an innovative digital platform that is tailored to challenge students on an individual basis that is linked to their MAP testing scores. Edgenuity creates assessment solutions that precisely measure growth and proficiency—and provide insights to help tailor instruction. It provides students with leveled work to target their weak areas across the whole curriculum thus, providing them with an opportunity to fill in previous ELA writing and reading gaps and also challenging them with above grade level work.
- Google Classroom will be available on each student’s Chromebook. The application is also available for students to have on their phones and other devices.
- The Pearson Perspectives student textbook for all grades 6,7 and 8 is available through an online version of Pearson. This links directly with Google classroom and assignments, quizzes and ALL texts that are used through this program are updated for students.
Grade 4
Students will use the ReadyGen series as they continue to develop their skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. ReadyGen is a K-6 integrated literacy program that accelerates learning for all by presenting modeled reading experiences with authentic text. Students engage in the practice, build motivation, and improve their reading stamina. In addition to this excellently balanced text, students will be engaged in reading and writing in various genres of literature, including tall tales, folklore, scientific-based fiction, and non-fiction, and poetry, just to name a few. Throughout the year, we will also integrate independent reading, weekly spelling units, and novel study units into the curriculum.
Fourth graders will expand vocabulary by speaking and listening effectively in classroom discussions, use a combination of strategies when reading, and read familiar selections with fluency and expression. The students will learn comprehension strategies for fiction and nonfiction texts.
Students will be asked to identify point of view, perspective, main ideas, supporting details and to make and confirm opinions, and use text-based evidence to formulate and answer questions. Students will write narratives, personal narratives, informative writing, opinion writing, and draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
ReadyGen provides 12 full-length, authentic literary and informational texts at every grade.
Another authentic text is the Text Collection. These are topic-related reads that span multiple genres and cultures. This includes poetry, primary sources, fiction excerpts, and biographies.
We will use our Reader’s and Writer Journal as classwork and homework.
During the ELA skills period, we will work on grammar, spelling.
Grade 5
Students will use the ReadyGen series to further develop their skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. ReadyGen is a K-6 integrated literacy program that accelerates learning for all by presenting modeled reading experiences with modeled reading experiences with authentic text. Students engage in practice, build motivation, and improve their reading stamina. In addition to this excellently balanced text, students will be engaged in reading and writing in various genres of literature, including mysteries, poetry and non-fiction, just to name a few. Throughout the year, we will also integrate independent reading, weekly spelling units, and novel study units into the curriculum.
Fifth graders will expand vocabulary by speaking and listening effectively in classroom discussions, use a combination of strategies when reading, and read familiar selections with fluency and expression. The students will learn comprehension strategies for fiction and nonfiction texts.
Students will be asked to identify main ideas, to make and confirm predictions, and to formulate questions about learning. Students will write narratives, informative, argumentative pieces, opinion writings and draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
ReadyGen provides 12 full-length, authentic literary and informational texts at every grade.
Another authentic text is the Text Collection. These are topically related reads that span multiple genres and cultures. This includes poetry, primary sources and biographies.
The Sleuth text is a collection of short, high-interest reading selection to sharpen students’ critical thinking skills.
There is also the Leveled Text Library. It is a broad range up to 60 conceptually connected texts at each grade.
