Saint Stephen School understands the importance of student expression through the Performing Arts in order to develop self-confidence and willingness to take risks. Performing Arts at Saint Stephen School is integrated into core subject areas such as English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math, as well as after-school opportunities in the Upper School.

Performing Arts in the Lower School

Students in the Lower School use pretend play, role play, and short skits to develop self-expression skills, increase comprehension and target a variety of learning styles. As students progress in their ability to perform, they begin to present to audiences in the classroom and onstage through plays and dramatic readings of original works.

Performing Arts in the Upper School

Students in the Upper School use speech and debate, as well as character and historical reenactments in class to support student comprehension and increase presentation skills. During the annual speech contest, students in the Upper School participate in class speech contests and students in grades 5-8 can move on to the school speech contest, where they can move on to participate in the district, city, state, and national speech contests.

In addition to experiences in the classroom, students in the Upper School have the opportunity to participate in the annual Spring Musical. From auditions to after-school rehearsals, students develop confidence and risk-taking skills as they hone their acting ability in preparation for the on-stage performance. Past performances have included Once Upon a Mattress, Beauty and the Beast, Suessical the Musical and Into The Woods.
